The Gracie Maternity Dress Knock off DIY - Sisters, What!

The Gracie Maternity Dress Knock off DIY

Our dear brother was just married a few weeks ago and their theme was the 50's. The 50's had some great styles when it comes to dresses, however when it comes to maternity, not so much my thing. I feel for those who were pregnant back then...
Well I had just decided to wear something not 50's, but then I came across this Gracie Maternity Dress here, but it was completely out of my price range, especially for a maternity dress. But I sent the picture to my mom and she immediately decided that she could make it for me. Bless her heart, she made it the day before she left for wedding. She is pretty much amazing.
She used the best of knits which made the dress very comfortable but was still very nice for the wedding. I plan on wearing this dress often for the reminder of this pregnancy and for future ones. Thanks Mom!

DIY Gracie Maternity Dress
My mom used a thicker knit fabric which I found to be very comfortable but not to clingy.
//1// First my mom bought this Megan Nielsen pattern. (she actually bought it from the site Dabble and Stitch - which is located  within the US, so shipping was much quicker)
//2// Here are the adjustments that she made to the pattern

[a] first she traced the pattern to some sturdy paper so that she can add adjustments to it
[b] then she lengthened the sleeves to the desired length
[c] the last adjustment she made was lengthening the shirt so that it was long enough to be a dress. (I almost forgot, she also brought the neckline up so that it was high like the original Gracie Dress)
[d] for the belt part, she just made up a tube pattern that looked about the right width and length. Then she sewed it onto the dress with a button.

She said that it was a great and easy pattern to work with. I think it's probably the most comfortable dress that I've worn since being pregnant.

  1. How adorable! I love it! Yeah, I feel like the 50s, despite their fun fashion, especially in I Love Lucy, dressed the pregnant women in circus tents. ;) But this is lovely!

  3. Do you know approx. how much shipping was for the pattern? I recently was gifted this same Megan Nielsen pattern, but had to wait a few weeks because it was sent directly from her in Australia. If it was sold in the U.S., no doubt it wouldn't take as long...

    1. Shipping was about the same as if buying it from Megan Nielsen's site, but the shipping is much quicker. I think it was 6.99

  7. I used the same pattern for my Easter dress this year, but had a lot of trial and error, aka picking stitches. Kudos to your mom!

  8. Also, could you ask your mom a question for me? When she lengthened the pattern to be a dress, did she just go straight down from the bottom of the shirt pattern, did she angle it in towards the knees, or did she flare it out at all? Thanks!
