Make your own DIY Halloween ghost sweatshirt with this simple reverse applique embroidery project. It’s a fun way to use up scrap fabric and turn a plain sweatshirt into a cute handmade Halloween shirt. You don’t need to be an experienced embroiderer either—this is a great beginner embroidery project and can be finished in an afternoon.

Last year I decided I needed a Halloween sweatshirt after seeing some cute ghost sweaters. I remembered my sister doing some reverse applique and figured it couldn't be that hard to make one myself. And it really wasn't! The longest part was doing the embroidery around the ghost, but even that was pretty simple.

The best part was digging through my fabric stash to find scraps that looked cute together. It ended up being such a fun fabric-busting craft, and I love that it gave some of my favorite little fabric scraps a purpose. It was also a quick project, which is always a win in my book.

My daughter wants to make one too, and I’d definitely recommend this as a beginner-friendly sewing and embroidery project. You can easily change up the fabric colors and embroidery to make your ghost sweatshirt completely your own.

Step 1: Print the Ghost Pattern

Print the ghost pattern and place it on your sweatshirt where you want your ghosts to go. You can make one ghost or add several ghosts across the front of the sweatshirt.

Step 2: Pin the Fabric

Choose the scrap fabrics you want to use for your ghosts. This is the fun part! Look through your fabric stash and pick a few fabrics that look good together.

Cut each piece of fabric so it's a little bigger than the ghost. Place the fabric behind the sweatshirt, directly underneath the ghost pattern, and pin it in place.

I like to pin around the outside of the ghost pattern so I know for sure that the fabric is underneath the entire area I'm going to sew.

Step 3: Embroider the Ghost

You could definitely do this part with a sewing machine, but I wanted my Halloween ghost sweatshirt to have more of a hand-embroidered look, so I did mine by hand. I love how it turned out!

I used a stem stitch to embroider around each ghost. It doesn't have to be perfect—the slightly handmade look is part of the charm. And don't forget to embroider the little ghost faces!

Step 4: Cut Out the Ghost

Once you've finished embroidering around your ghost, it's time for the reverse applique part.

Carefully cut out the inside of the ghost, cutting along the inside edge of your embroidery. As you cut away the sweatshirt fabric, the scrap fabric underneath will be revealed.

Remove the paper pattern and wash off any remaining pattern marks if necessary.

And that's it! You now have a cute DIY Halloween ghost sweatshirt made with scrap fabric and a little hand embroidery.
