Easter is a wonderful time of year to put together new outfits for your kiddos. Making a skirt for your girl can be simple and fun and making suit jackets for your boys is easier than you think!
Growing up, my mom would sew new Easter outfits for us and sometimes we'd get new shoes to go with them. I loved it! However, with boys, it has always been a little trickier as what I can make them and as they have gotten older even harder as they have become opinionated about what they will wear. I have made them bow ties out of fabric and one year faux leather bow ties. But now they won't wear bow ties.
Easter Outfits: Gathered skirts and DIY boys Suit Jacket
For my little girl, I started making her a dress or skirt of some sort every Easter. I make it big so it can hopefully fit her for at least 2 years. The first one I made her was when she turned one and she loved that one until it just got too small for her. The flower dress above was the dress I made for her last year. I made it two sizes too big and it is still one of her favorites and fits her really well still. It is a hack of a Mouse House Creation's Caroline Party Dress. I added bell sleeves.Little Girl Gathered Strawberry Skirt
This year for her dress I decided to make her a skirt using my painted strawberries turned into fabric. She loves strawberries (she actually asked for a strawberry shortcake dress), so I decided this would be a perfect way to use my strawberry fabric.
For the pattern I used Lil Lux Collection Solil Skirt from Project Run and Play. It was such an easy pattern to follow. I loved all the little details of the bow and optional suspenders that can be taken on or off.
Strawberry Purse
And let's talk about this strawberry purse...when I saw it on Delia Creates, I knew I needed to make it for her birthday. She has been asking me for a purse so this was perfect. It was so easy to make too! the only thing I did different then Delia, was I left the top unsewn so that she could put things inside. And she totally loves it!
DIY Boys Suit Jacket or Blazer
Now for my boys this year, I actually each made them a blazer using the Basic Blazer by Blank Slate Patterns. And let me clarify here, I did not start this year thinking "I'm going to sew each of my boys a suit jacket". My oldest turned 8 in January and was baptized in our church and I had this crazy idea of making him a suit. But I had an old dress made out of suit fabric and decided to test the idea on a smaller subject and made one for my baby first.
It turned out to be so much easier than I thought so I went ahead and made one for my 8 year old. I totally made it a size bigger, but hand on face, it fit him just barely perfectly. After a month or two of recovering, I decided to try again and make him a bigger size. This time it worked and I gave the first one I made him to his younger brother.
So this Easter season (after 3 months of slowly working on them) my boys ended up each with a suit jacket to wear. And no, I did not end up making suit pants. But I love the jackets and my boys do too!! And if you want to make some suit jackets you should!! they are so much easier to make than I thought, especially with the Blank Slate pattern.
I even made strawberry felt pins to go on their blazers to match their sisters dress, but alas, I didn't get a picture of all three of them together, at least not yet.
